March 19th, 2010 — Gardening Tips, Ideas, Landscaping, Water Gardens
Although the water country gardens depicted in the magazines are generally quite large and complex, there is no reason why you cannot create your own stunning water garden easily and without much effort. The trick to water gardening easily and effectively has to do with properly planning and customizing your water garden to your own tastes, your own abilities, your own budget, your own assistance and the amount of property that you have. Within these specific guidelines, you will be able to effectively build anything you want, beginning with a small and charming container garden and expanding to something as large and complex as a series of small streams with interconnected ponds filled with koi.
Easier, smaller types of water gardens are definitely a good place to get started. The smaller that your little water garden is in general, the less expensive and the less time consuming it is going to be in terms of installation as well as maintenance. You should not feel that your water garden will be looked down upon simply because it is small – Because all that really matters is that you love and cherish your water garden. You can always grow your water garden into something more amazing as time goes on, adding additional water features, fish and plants as you go along. You can even add additional ponds, creating feeder streams that connect them all together.
If you suspect at any point that you do want a larger pond, then you can consider a container water garden to start, slowly adding until you have the space and the water supply that you want. This task is definitely easy to complete, and it does not have to take up much space if you do it correctly. There is no harm in simply slowly growing your water garden as you go. This will make sure that your most important considerations are always kept in mind, including as mentioned before, your own tastes, your own abilities, your own budget, your own assistance and the amount of property that you have.
There are some other considerations that you need to make including the placement of your water garden, the micro climate within your yard and the water garden style that you want to create in your yard. You are going to want to put a lot of time and thought into these three considerations in other to make sure that you get the most out of your water garden. If you do not put enough thought into these things, then you may end up disappointed in the results of your water garden endeavor, which would be a waste of time and money. The more time and effort that you put into these things, the placement of your water garden, the micro climate within your yard and the water garden style that you want to create in your yard, the better your results will be in the end.

What You Need to Know
What exactly does do it yourself landscaping and design consist of? Granted, both landscape, and design are words very common and used every day, certainly not words that would send you running for the dictionary. However, asking yourself precisely what do it yourself landscape and design evokes for you is a less futile exercise: by thoroughly exploring the various nooks and crannies, we could uncover an aspect in this diverse scope that we have been missing the entire time. You could call it Do It Yourself landscaping and design 101.
How about we start by answering this question with a simple definition that gives consideration to both conservation of energy, and to aesthetics? Even more, let us consider this a specific definition of Do It Yourself landscaping and design, so that we keep the discussion discrete from the concerns of professionals.
Defining DIY Landscaping Design
DIY landscape design is the art of modifying or arranging the features of the landscape, or the area around a home in order to improve the property for numerous reasons including practicality, function and for aesthetic value as well. This concept is somewhat subjective, because arranging or designing a landscape for functionality or aesthetic value will depend on who you are attempting to benefit. While you may have your own very distinct tastes, there are also some basic guidelines that you should be following in order to create a landscape design that is universally valuable in all of these ways.
Even if you are only doing your own landscaping so that you can suit your own tastes in terms of landscape aesthetics, you should still be aware of the fact that there are certain guidelines that should be followed in general. For example, you should be trying to conserve energy when you are designing your landscape, especially with how you use the land and how you position certain plants, such as trees for example.
You are also going to want to consider how your yard is being used. If you have children, then you will want to provide ample space for them to play. If you do not have children, then how will you utilize your yard? Make sure that you are creating a landscaping space that accommodates how the space is actually going to be used. Creating a visually appealing landscape that cannot be used or utilized in any way is not really doing you any favors after all. Make sure that you find the right combination between function and form when designing a landscape. Once you have a basic idea of what you are trying to achieve with your landscape, the next step is simply to put your plan into action – Make it happen!

Although fall and winter are upon us, and most gardeners think having a garden is now out of season, it is an excellent time to make landscape changes to your country garden. During this time, the plants and weeds have begun dying and thanks to the occasional fall rain, the ground is soft enough to dig comfortably. This is an excellent opportunity for gardeners to begin preparing their gardens for next spring and to possibly plant a fall or winter garden. There are any number of possibilities you can do in order to create an attractive country garden.
Country garden landscaping is not simply a process of planting a few plants; it is an art form that has spanned many centuries from Europe. For the true gardener, he or she will want to structure his or her garden in a unique way that matches his or her tastes. Landscaping is meant to provide an area that is relaxing and pleasing to the eye, while encouraging nature and humanity to be a part of one another. It is a location where you can leave your home one moment and step into the paradise you have made for yourself in your garden, and then step right back into your home when you need to.
Gardening is a tradition that many individuals find meditative and allows one to be a part of nature for a time. Country gardening focuses on bringing many different country plants and herbs into a garden location, where a gardener can then utilize the cuttings or plants for use in the kitchen or in the medicine room. However, the country garden can also be used just for decorative purposes, being filled with many different varieties of plants that look attractive but serve no practical purpose. This gives an infinite amount of freedom to a gardener who can then landscape his or her country garden any way that he or she wishes.
Landscaping can be done by following any concept or idea that a gardener would like to, and is not limited in scope or type of plant save for the planting zone that he or she is in, or the amount of area available. Many stores and supplies specialize in landscaping, and offer many different products and materials in order to help you landscape your country garden in the way you would like. Although most of these materials are only available at certain times of the year, you are still able to special order them whenever you would like and utilize them in any fashion that you desire.
For gardeners, landscaping a country garden is an excellent opportunity to express creativity while being a part of nature. With all of the many possibilities available to use in a country garden, you can be assured of creating a unique spot solely for the gardener that will be attractive and pleasing to the eye. In addition, the country garden can serve a number of practical purposes, and can even add to cooking or baking supplies.

February 21st, 2010 — Design, Flowers
Flowers in your country garden landscape can be designed and combined in a wide variety of different ways, some of which are much more interesting than others. Flowers can be arranged in layers, or they can be arranged by color. They can be arranged in natural groupings, or you may even arrange them based on the time that they are expected to bloom. Plants that do not flower and vegetables can also be added to your country garden landscape in order to add structure and foliage to the overall appearance of your garden. Some gardens are also created specifically with how they smell in mind, containing flowers that specifically give off fragrance and perform throughout the length of the growing season.
Layers and Color
In order to arrange a country garden landscape based on layers, you should begin in the back. More often than not, three tiers are sufficient for this purpose. The third tier is the tallest tier, or the tallest layer of plants. This tier should be located either neat the back of the other flowers, or on the sides furthest from the eye of the viewer. When attempting to accomplish this with larger gardens, the tier can be an entire tree line. When smaller gardens are being designed, shrubs or taller plants can be used for this purpose.
Second tier and first tier plants can be merged in with the third tier in order to give the garden multiple different levels of dimensions depending on from what angle you are looking at it. This will also help to avoid creating a highly formal or overly structured country garden landscape. Low lying forms of ground cover can usually make up the first tier, and then you can use a variety of different heights of intermediate level flowers in order to create an easy transition from the lowest layers of the flowers to the tallest. The key thing that you need to remember when you are arranging a garden this way, or by color, is that sometimes plants look different when they are placed next to certain other plants. When color is the issue, sometimes the color of a flower can appear differently when placed next to certain other colored flowers.
Natural Groupings and Seasonal Blooms
Arranging gardens by the natural groupings of plants is a way to make your garden mimic the same patterns that are found in nature. This is something that can be accomplished by placing plants adjacent to one another that would normally bloom at the same time or that would naturally grow together. When plants are grouped in these ways, the focus of the garden can shift naturally as seasons progress. Each area of the garden will have a time where the focus is put specifically on it.
There are a wide variety of possibilities for planting flowers in your country garden landscape. Don’t be afraid to experiment, testing out different options until you find one that you are satisfied with.

Country gardens can be gorgeous and many of us have dreamed having one just like we’ve seen in gardening magazines. Though the gardens featured there are often professional gardens where the owners have devoted hundreds of hours to planning, designing and maintaining, we picture lush patches of flowers in our own yards that could rival those photographs. Then when our gardens pale by comparison we wonder where we went wrong.
It’s important to realize that few of us have the time or money to create gardens like the ones in landscaping and country garden magazines. If you’ll stand for no less and you have the money, you can use a trick of the affluent to go from bare plot to gorgeous country garden in a few days–buy all the plants and flowers fully grown, or almost grown. Some of the best looking gardens are created, not from seed and careful nurturing, but because the owner went to a greenhouse and selected several ready plants for his or her yard. Barring that, it’s important to realize that while your country garden might never rival those on the cover of a magazine, your garden should be a reflection of your likes and your personality while being something you can maintain.
How much room do you really have? If your yard is small, it’s probably easy to be envious of sprawling country gardens. And you may want to plan a garden similar to one you’ve seen. But remember that you can’t fill every inch of your yard with flowers and vegetation. You’re best planning a few border patches of flowers, a flower bed around the base of a tree or a mailbox, and sprinklings of plants here and there. Even a small yard can benefit from gardening and landscaping, but often other touches besides plants themselves help make it beautiful. One garden plot can be made more dramatic with a path leading to it or some carefully placed statuary.
How much time do you really have? Even if you have the space to rival a magazine-cover country garden, do you have the time to maintain it properly? Think this over carefully while you’re designing and planning your landscaping. Even if you choose ready-to-go plants instead of seeds or tiny plants that need to grow into the space, a garden will still take work. There’s pruning and trimming, pests to worry about, weeding . . . if your time is limited a small country garden will probably be best no matter how badly you want an acre of flowerbeds.
Is it really what you want? Your neighbors might grow roses, there might be a Rose Fest in your town every year, rose growing competitions, a Rose Bowl and a Rose Queen. So you might decide that you should have roses, too. Learn everything about growing roses. Then decide if you’re willing to devote the time required and do you even really like roses that much? Grow what you think is beautiful, and what you can maintain.

One of the best ways that you can make your home look larger and more inviting is by designing your garden in a clever way so that it can serve as something of an extension to the rest of your living space. By doing this, you will be adding a significant amount of value to your home property, which is vital if you plan to sell any time soon. Do not forget that in this day and age, many home buyers are specifically looking for added features and extras that are already done for them, because this means that they will not need to do all of the work themselves.
Stunning country garden landscaping work that has been planned out well and incorporates practical and functional benefits can attract a lot of attention from prospective buyers. You can section off an area where your children can play, for example. You may consider creating privacy using fencing and plants that climb those feces. Things like this will draw a lot of positive attention to your property, which means just a little bit of focused landscaping work can really go a long way when it comes to your home and your garden.
When you are designing your country garden landscaping, it might be a good idea for you to consider implementing a patio or a deck leading out from large doors. What you are going to want to do is to create space that will allow visitors to your home to walk into the room and then immediately be drawn into the outside space that you are offering. You can also use the decking or patio space in your country garden landscape to create an outside entertaining and dining space. You may also want to consider covering this space and creating a heating and cooling system so that you can use this area all throughout the year rather than only during certain months or in certain climates.
Another idea that you may want to consider when it comes to your patio or deck space is to implement an outdoor kitchen with something like an oven or a barbecue and a sink so that this space can be used for entertainment purposes. If your home is tight and short on space, bring some of your needs outside. If your property is especially strapped for entertaining space or cooking space inside the home, for example, then why not create a cozy and enjoyable space outdoors that your family and friends can enjoy? Not only will this provide entertainment value for you now, but it will increase the value of your home should you ever decide to sell it in the future. This is a great way to really bring a country garden landscaping project to life and will compliment the flowers and plants that you add to your garden space.

We have all been in a well landscaped backyard and wondered why our own doesn’t look as great. The reason is very simple, landscaping design. Typically the best looking backyards don’t just happen, they are well planned and designed before a single bit of work is started. To begin to create a great backyard for your own home, learn a few landscaping design basics to get started.
Your home improvement or gardening store is a good place to get started with your landscaping design lessons. These stores usually have some experts on hand who can give you some great advice for your own backyard. There are also a number of books and magazines available in these stores that will help you in the planning stages of your own landscaping design.
The Internet is another good resource for learning the basics of landscaping design. There are some wonderful sites online that will give you great ideas for your own backyard and the steps necessary to put it all in place. Planning is one of the key factors in a well designed landscape and many of the sites offer planning tools for you to use.
Many resources for information will point you toward even more resources for more. As you learn the basics of designing a backyard landscape, you will be full of ideas for making your own yard the tranquil space that you want.
Take your time with your landscaping design. Explore all of your options for lighting, plants, fountains, seating, walkways and all the details that turn a simple backyard into an oasis. To determine the kind of items you will need for your landscaping design you should make some decisions on how the backyard will be used. Do you plan to entertain in your yard? Will your backyard be your personal sanctuary after a hard day’s work? Answering these questions will help you choose the perfect elements for your design.
Create a plan and determine your budget for your landscaping design before you get started, as well. If you plan to do most of the work on your own, you will save a great deal of money on the cost of labor for your design. Many people successfully create their own landscaping design on their own, but need some help with contractors for the more difficult aspects of the design. Electrical work and plumbing might be too difficult so include the cost of a contractor in your budget for the work you will not be able to do on your own. Plan to go about twenty percent over your budget plan in the beginning so that you are prepared for unexpected expenses.
A landscaping design makes your backyard the envy of the neighborhood. If you are looking to increase your living space, take your design ideas outside and use the wonderful space you have in your own backyard. It will become your favorite space once you have created the beautiful and relaxing atmosphere that you want for your backyard.

December 2nd, 2009 — Gardening Tips
We’ve talked about making mistakes in container gardening before, let us address some additional mistakes:
1 – Do not be afraid to prune your plants. When your container garden is beginning to look ragged or leggy, you absolutely should not be afraid to cut them back properly. You may want to move them into an out-of-the-way space until you can re-bound them. With a good “haircut” of sorts, you will be able to help your plants come back happier and healthier than ever before.
2 – Beware of overbearing neighbors. You need to take care to make sure that all of the plants within your container garden are going to share the same requirements in terms of sun, water and soil requirements. You can find this information on the plant labels or the seed packets when you choose your plants.
3 – Do not starve your plants. Most potting mix only really has a few of the nutrients that your plants are going to require in order for them to grow properly and to be completely healthy. You are going to need to add the necessary nutrients to your soil for the best possible results. There are a number of fertilizers that you can purchase for this purpose, and make sure that you are buying the right fertilizer for your plants, your flowers, your vegetables and your herbs accordingly.
4 – Don’t be afraid to compost. If you cannot save a plant, and you have tried everything to resuscitate your plant, cut your losses and simply add your plant to the composting bin. If only one plant in a container of numerous plants is in an icky state, pull that plant out and simply replace it.
5 – Do not let your expectations become unrealistic. Before you make your own personal container garden you are going to want to evaluate how you live. If you travel a lot during the summer months, then you are going to need containers that are self watering or you are going to need to know someone that can help you keep your plants alive while you are away. You also need to garden based on where you live and how you live. Make sure that your container garden fits in well with your lifestyle so that you do not end up overdoing it and overwhelming yourself, or under doing it and feeling underwhelmed, as both of these things will lead to giving up prematurely.
Container gardening is not brain surgery, and there is plenty of room for error, but avoiding these container gardening mistakes will help you have a much better experience over all. Your garden should be enjoyable, after all, and if it is not bringing you joy because all of your plants are dying, then you need to figure out what is being done wrong so that you can fix it and move on.

November 28th, 2009 — Gardening Tips, container gardening
1 – Never fill a large container until it is in the right place. If you don’t believe me, try lifting a large container garden that is filled with plants and soil and you will understand. If you are dealing with a container that is naturally large or unwieldy, make sure it’s in the right place first before you attempt filling it.
2 – Never drown your plants. In order to avoid the overwatering mistake with your plants, make sure that all of your containers have plenty of drainage holes. You also want to know what all of the moisture requirements are for your plants, following them as closely as you possibly can. When you overwater, your leaves will begin to turn yellow, falling off, or your plants may no longer be able to stand up.
3 – Never underwater your plants. Most container gardens are going to need to be watered at least once daily in the summer time. Many plants, especially those that are in hanging planters or smaller containers are going to require even more watering since there is less soil present in order to hang on to the water. When you water, make sure that the plants are really soaked rather than simply giving them a sip.
4 – Don’t put too many plants in your pot. Make sure that you are considering each plant in terms of proportion when you are putting it in a container. If you put a bunch of short plants in a large container, then it may end up appearing stunted. If you are looking for a rule of thumb, you may want to have at least one plant that is as tall as the container is. You might also want to choose plants that spill out over the sides so that the plants do not all look stunted in the containers that you choose.
5 – Only buy healthy plants. You are going to want to buy your plants from a reputable nursery in your local area, and you should never buy plants that are weak or sickly. If you buy plants that are healthy, then you will have much greater results. And the best place to buy plants that are healthy and free of issues and pesticides is going to be a local nursery rather than a big box garden store.
If you cannot resist the prices that come with buying plants from the cheap big box stores, find ways to invest in container gardening on a budget. There are plenty of ways to save money buying plants. If you have to buy your plants from a big box store, buy them on the day they arrive in the store, before they have a chance to get sick or begin to die. This will give you the best possible chance of getting a relatively healthy plant, even though you are not buying it from the most reputable place.
