When you plant a flower, you are making an investment into the future. Certain plants will work well with others, and some will require completely different ground nutrients. So when it comes to planting new flowers, it is like putting money into a savings account or stocks. Play it smart.
You can shoot for a quick return when planting. These would be you annuals, which will be blooming when you plant them, and they will continue to show off their beauty until the fall, when they die and you have to start over. At the other end of the scale, you have your retirement funds. Trees fall under this category, since they require a great deal of investment to see fruit or shade. In the middle are your perennials. They will give yearly returns, but at the cost of a little extra work going into planting them.
As with any investment, you should go in with a plan. Look at perennials that thrive in your region. Know what kind of resources you will need, in terms of sunlight, watering, nutrients, etc. The soil type and conditions will also have an effect on the choice of perennial. Some can deal with any kind of soil, while others want certain soil conditions. Trying to plant a perennial in conditions it does not favor is a poor decision that will result in plants barely able to thrive.
The next step is to understand what it will take to plant the perennials and promote healthy growth. Once the perennial is planted, the first year’s blooms will be sparse, in little clusters of growths. More mature plants may give you a head start. Once you reach the next couple of years, the plants will grow faster than a kid in middle school. They will grow out and up, with larger blooms, bringing a beauty to the garden, growing a little larger every year.
It is for this reason that perennials are like an IRA, no portfolio should be without it as an investment. One the plant has take root and made itself a home, they will stay in the garden for many years to come. They are practically maintenance free; as they will grow with the resources they can muster without your help. They will form the foundation of your garden, which you can then later add other kinds of plants to.
When the winter months come, perennials will have their surface plants die off, only to return in the spring if the plant is healthy enough. If you arrange your garden correctly, there will be color all season. Plant a variety of perennials based upon when they blossom in the season, and you will have a truly wonderful garden.
The beginning of the year is the right time to start planning your garden. Research online, learning what the basic weather will be like, along with what works well in your region. Go to home improvement stores and ask the experts there. Assuming the store is in your area, they should have first hand knowledge of what are good and poor choices.

If you are designing a country garden landscape, you are probably already aware of the fact that there are an endless myriad of different things that you can do to turn your landscaping endeavor into something that is truly unique. There are all kinds of different elements in your landscaping and gardening effort that you can give a country feel to without losing the unique nature of your landscape. Here are some quick tips for creating country garden landscaping looks in your own yard easily and effective without having to spend a lot of money in the process.
- One of the first things that you need to consider with your country garden landscaping effort is the hard scape elements, which are things like rocks, pottery, fences, walls and other similar details. You should focus on putting these elements in first, because plants, flowers and even trees can grow on and around them, but it will be harder to place them once your plants have been established. Some of the best hard scape elements for a country garden landscaping endeavor will include trellises, white picket fences, arranged stones, small retainer walls and other similar elements. Once you put these elements in, you are well on your way to creating the perfect country garden landscaping look.
- Now that your hard scape elements have been established, the next step is to consider your plants. What will you grow and where will you put them? Plan your garden out on paper first, giving consideration to the colors, sizes and other details of plants and flowers before you plant them. Planting a tree with roots that grow horizontally may decimate your flower beds, but planting trees with deep, vertical growing roots will allow flowers and other plants to grow directly around your trees. How much space you have will also dictate what kinds of plants you attract. Keep in mind that native plants always grow better than non native species, especially when it comes to country garden landscaping.
- If you are short on space and need to stick primarily to a container based country garden landscaping endeavor, do not convince yourself that you are short on ideas. For example, some people have planted smaller plants like flowers and herbs in tea pots and tea cups, allowing them to create unique and exciting pottery and containers for their country garden landscaping effort without taking up a lot of space. There are other ways to create a country garden landscaping effort using small containers for your plants. Buy up old antique watering cans and other unique features, make sure they are converted into working pots or planters, and scatter them around your space with plants inside.
- If you are container gardening or gardening in tight spaces, you should also consider how different plants will work together when touching. Putting plants that do not get along well together can cause one plant to overtake another, which can be detrimental to the health of your country garden landscape.

Country gardens can be gorgeous and many of us have dreamed having one just like we’ve seen in gardening magazines. Though the gardens featured there are often professional gardens where the owners have devoted hundreds of hours to planning, designing and maintaining, we picture lush patches of flowers in our own yards that could rival those photographs. Then when our gardens pale by comparison we wonder where we went wrong.
It’s important to realize that few of us have the time or money to create gardens like the ones in landscaping and country garden magazines. If you’ll stand for no less and you have the money, you can use a trick of the affluent to go from bare plot to gorgeous country garden in a few days–buy all the plants and flowers fully grown, or almost grown. Some of the best looking gardens are created, not from seed and careful nurturing, but because the owner went to a greenhouse and selected several ready plants for his or her yard. Barring that, it’s important to realize that while your country garden might never rival those on the cover of a magazine, your garden should be a reflection of your likes and your personality while being something you can maintain.
How much room do you really have? If your yard is small, it’s probably easy to be envious of sprawling country gardens. And you may want to plan a garden similar to one you’ve seen. But remember that you can’t fill every inch of your yard with flowers and vegetation. You’re best planning a few border patches of flowers, a flower bed around the base of a tree or a mailbox, and sprinklings of plants here and there. Even a small yard can benefit from gardening and landscaping, but often other touches besides plants themselves help make it beautiful. One garden plot can be made more dramatic with a path leading to it or some carefully placed statuary.
How much time do you really have? Even if you have the space to rival a magazine-cover country garden, do you have the time to maintain it properly? Think this over carefully while you’re designing and planning your landscaping. Even if you choose ready-to-go plants instead of seeds or tiny plants that need to grow into the space, a garden will still take work. There’s pruning and trimming, pests to worry about, weeding . . . if your time is limited a small country garden will probably be best no matter how badly you want an acre of flowerbeds.
Is it really what you want? Your neighbors might grow roses, there might be a Rose Fest in your town every year, rose growing competitions, a Rose Bowl and a Rose Queen. So you might decide that you should have roses, too. Learn everything about growing roses. Then decide if you’re willing to devote the time required and do you even really like roses that much? Grow what you think is beautiful, and what you can maintain.
