January 9th, 2012 — Gardening Tips, Japense Garden
The people of Japan have been fond of landscapes and gardens for more than 500 years. This is especially true when it comes to Zen gardens, which are an ancient Buddhist practice. One of the primary aspects of the Zen and Zen Garden concepts is about creating art out of a landscape, and this is where ancient traditional Japanese landscape garden design comes from.
In today’s world, there are only a few dozen traditional Japanese gardens that you can find around the world, and some of them are famous. They can be found in places other than Japan, but Japan has its fair share of small and large Japanese garden landscapes. The Japanese garden concept is all about the essence behind creating your own small little world in a backyard or garden space.
For many Americans, Japanese gardens involve a lot of Japanese elements such as bonsai trees and bamboo plants, but there are many other characteristics and facets that need to be considered when it comes to creating a true Japanese garden landscape. Japanese landscaping design is actually an art form not unlike painting or brush calligraphy in Japan, and there is a devotion to these gardens that is unlike any other.
Many contractors that specialize in Japanese landscaping design have spent time working in the creation of specialized Japanese gardens. There are several different varieties of Japanese gardens, and each come with their own cost depending on the complexity involved. There are Japanese dry gardens or rock gardens for example, which utilize huge rocks, water pouring over the rocks and clever landscaping that turns the garden space into a lush waterfall. There are other gardens that use sand for the representation of water, surrounding huge rocks that are designed to represent countries.
In order to create a Japanese garden landscape that is authentic in feeling, you are going to want something that is calm and tranquil, allowing you to hear the water and take in the calm sights, which means your garden should be secluded away from noisy streets and neighbors.
Japanese garden landscapes may also have walls and gates, especially those incorporating natural elements like Bamboo, as Bamboo stalks can be found in most of the countries across Asia. You will also find a variety of different Flora elements including Sakura, the Japanese cherry blossom, Bonsai and Pine trees, which are all often found in the Japanese garden setting. There are a number of other pieces of decoration that you can utilize such as a Koi pond, small natural bridges, stone lanterns, stone steps and other tranquil natural elements that lend to the creation of a tranquil and inviting space.
If you want to create your own Japanese garden landscape, first read up on the elements that are traditionally Japanese, and then you can focus on implementing them in your own unique way.

December 7th, 2011 — container gardening, Gardening Tips
There are seven different, basic elements that are going to be required when you are beginning an organic container garden of any time. These seven elements are water, plants, sunlight, temperature, fertilizers or nutrients, patience and adequate space.
1. Plants are one of the more obvious basic elements because they are what is going to be planted, grown and harvested. This is what organic gardening is all about. You should be choosing plants that you are interested in growing and harvesting in order to get the most out of your garden space. You can grow anything you want in containers, and the plants will stay adequately sized for the containers because the roots will be properly contained. Determine the types of plants or crops you are interested in growing and make sure to use them properly.
2. Water is another essential for your organic garden. The soil in your planters should always be properly watered, but you should take care not to drown your plants. The soil should be moist but never overly wet.
3. Sunlight is another essential, and it needs to be offered to your plants every single day. Make sure that your plants are being placed in an area where they are going to receive adequate daily sunlight. You must also make sure to remove them if it becomes too hot, however, because the leaves can be burned or dried out by too much sun.
4. Temperature is another essential, as plants should be kept in a steady temperature ranging between 55 degrees and 75 degrees Celsius. This will help to make sure that your plants keep their moisture and maintain their shine. The roots of your container plants are going to be much more sensitive to temperature than plants that are placed in the ground, so make sure that your plants are getting the right temperature in order for them to thrive.
5. Fertilizers and nutrients are also vital for the success of your plants. Choose organic fertilizers that contain no chemicals to make sure that your plants get everything they need and nothing that they don’t. You can buy a multitude of different fertilizer products from your local gardening shop.
6. Planning out your gardening space is also important. You are going to need a fair bit of space in order to accommodate your container garden, so make sure that you plan this all out properly before you go about planting. Once you plant in your containers, moving them may be difficult.
7. Finally, patience is an often overlooked but vitally important element when it comes to organic container gardening. Make sure that you are patient when working with your garden in order to obtain the best possible results. This is the best way to ensure that you enjoy your garden and allow it to thrive in your care.

December 2nd, 2011 — Ideas, Water Gardens
There are so many different sizes, styles and types of outdoor fountains that are available these days, you should have absolutely no difficulty finding one that is going to suit your garden, no matter how large or how unique your garden actually is. The sights and the sounds associated with falling water are regarded as being soothing, and therefore they are quite capable of enhancing the feel and the ambiance within your garden. If you have a backyard area that is large and spacious, then you may want to look into what freestanding water fountains have to offer. There are also plenty of other options including some that attach to walls and other smaller models that fit on patios, tables, ledges and more.
Depending on the theme that you are attempting to create, you can even create your own special outdoor fountains and water features simply by using natural materials. You may want to create a space where birds can gather to drink, for example, and this is a completely obtainable goal. You may even consider recreating an old fashioned country garden scene in your garden, using materials like old barrel troughs with old fashioned pumps, whiskey barrels and other antique materials can be used to create the country garden feeling in your garden space. You can use a few barrels to create a small trickling waterfall, with water dripping from larger barrel to smaller and smaller again in a unique fashion.
If you have a water feature already on your property, some types of fountains can be added to make a bigger water element out of a smaller one. This is a great way to expand upon a pond or a waterfall by expanding on the water elements that already exist. You could even tuck fountains into beds of flowers, or even plant flowers that climb around the fountain so that they grow up and around the natural materials to create an even more natural appearance. Many fountains are made out of precast concrete, which is not all that pretty, but there is a lot that you can do with a plain water fountain or water fall to dress it up, make it your own and help it fit in with the design of your garden, no matter what theme your garden follows.
If you want to avoid having your fountain appear out of place, try to replicate the natural look of your garden and your region as closely as you possibly can. You can choose natural looking stone fountains, or build your own for this purpose. You can build your own fountain, water fall or other water feature to suit your space and it may fit in more than if you were simply going to buy a pre cast concrete fountain, as these are not unique, not natural looking, and often appear completely out of place unless they are decorated well to look natural, which costs more in the long run unless you do it yourself.

Are you trying to create the unique touch of a country garden in your own garden space? Do you want your backyard to emanate that country landscaping touch? You can absolutely have exactly what you are looking for in a country garden, and no, it does not require you to hire an expensive landscaper in the process. All it takes is some basic do it yourself landscaping tips and you can create the landscape or garden space that you have always been dreaming about.
First and foremost, when you are planning out your garden space with a country theme, you are going to want to consider natural elements. The best way to add a perfect country touch to your landscape or garden is to add in natural elements as often as you possibly can. For example, you should consider adding rocks, pebbles and boulders, stone walls, waterfalls and other water elements and other natural elements that allow you to bring the beauty of the world into your small garden space. Using these items is really easy, and they add character to the backyard that you are trying to plan. You can make your small backyard look like a huge expansive country garden just by adding the right touches and the right features. Create a flowerbed with pebbles mixed into the mulch or add flat rocks to create a walking path that winds through your garden space.
Something else that you may want to consider adding in order to bring more natural elements into your country garden landscaping space is to add climbing vines. This is a great country landscaping touch that you can bring into your own personal garden space. Climbing vines can easily be acquired in a number of different colors depending on the type of plant. Choose perennial vines so that you have flowers returning constantly and beautiful vines growing throughout the year rather than during only certain months. Some of the best types of perennial vines are glory vine, bittersweet and clematis for example. You may also try passion flower and Japanese creeper. Make sure that you have a support system set up for your climbing vines so that they can flourish. You can use arbors, trellises and wires for example.
Another good DIY landscaping tip is to avoid wood frames for your vines if they have aerial roots because the vines can cause wood rot, destroying the beautiful look of your garden.
Want to add some beauty to your beautiful country garden landscape? Attract butterflies using bright flowers capable of producing nectar such as butterfly bush, purple coneflower, cornflower, alyssum, heliotrope, salvia, larkspur, zinnia and sunflower. Butterflies will add to the beauty of your garden, making it your own personal space. Attracting them is easy when you have the right flowers in your country garden space, and they add a lot of life and beauty to the space around you.

It is the tools that make the garden in many cases. Having the right tools for your country garden landscape is vitally important if you want to get the most out of your plants. Some of these tools simply cannot be lived without when it comes to gardening on your own. Here is a guide to the gardening tools that you must have in your arsenal in order to create a good garden space no matter how large or how small your garden space actually is.
- * Spade: This is a hand tool that is used for the purpose of digging up soil and loosening soil. The average spade has a flat blade and its bottom edge is sharp.
- * Pruning Shears: These typically have straight blades for cutting, and they are capable of varying in size. When choosing a pair of pruning shears, keep in mind what types of plants you will be pruning and buy accordingly.
- * Trowel: This is an absolute must have when you need to dig small holes. It is shaped like a scoop and has a handle as well as a blade that is pointed and metal. Trowels also happen to be quite handy when it comes to weeding.
- * Hose: You are going to need a high quality garden hose and should also have an adjustable nozzle for it. You should keep the hose handy at all times so that you are not dragging it all over with you as you go. Keep in mind that a nozzle that is adjustable is also food for plants that only like light mists of water.
- * Spading Fork: A spading form is like a regular fork, but the tines are flat and they are wide. The purpose of this tool is to help you turn your dirt over for good aeration.
- * Plant Stakes: These will help to make sure that your garden is growing tall.
- * Garden Labels: These will help to make sure that you know where each plant is being planted. If you do not want to label each plant, draw a sketch so that you can keep track.
- * Rake: An ordinary, common garden rake can be extremely useful for removing top debris including weeds and dead leaves in order to keep your garden looking great.
- * Cultivator: This is a very handy tool that will allow you to stir nutrients into your soil while aerating your soil.
There are a wide variety of other tools that you can add into your arsenal to keep things growing as your garden grows. Keep these tools in mind when you begin to build your tool arsenal, making sure that your country garden landscape is growing beautifully all throughout the year as well as for many, many years to come.

Rock garden fountains are capable of providing your garden space with a focal point as well as visual style for any living space that you are looking to create. Rock is a mineral that is formed naturally and available in a wide variety of different shapes, sizes, types and designs. Here is a look at more of what you need to know when it comes to rock garden fountains in your garden or landscape space.
Location of Rock Garden Fountains
Where you place your fountain within your rock garden is very important in regards to its overall effect. When the fountain is placed near where people will be, the sound of trickling water tends to have a soothing effect, promoting relaxation. Putting a fountain on the corner of a deck or patio can act as a highlight. In more formal rock gardens, a fountain may have a marble base, or it may have mosaic tiling for contrast. Table top “zen” fountains are often found inside on work or receptionists desk to help break up the scenery, and help bring calm to the area.
Purpose of Rock Garden Fountains
Rocks are considered to be an earthy element when they are added into design. For the people that are looking to add rock into their landscape but do not live in a rocky terrain or near a mountain side, one great solution is simply to add a rock garden into their garden or landscape. Many of these unique fountains are utilized in a wide variety of different areas where light is used such as close to an entryway or along a path in a backyard. You can easily strategically place lighting near the fountain, shining some light onto the rocks so that they stand out not only during the day but also at night as well. Garden statues, bird houses and benches are all also capable of being displayed close to the fountain in order to create a truly unique outdoor point of focus.
Maintenance of Rock Garden Fountains
Rock is something that is capable of naturally chipping away, especially when you consider the pressure of the water and surrounding elements such as the weather for example. Over a period of time, oxidation is capable of causing some types of rock to become discolored with a patina. Because many types of rocks contain a trace of copper or other forms of minerals, you should plan on eventually acquiring a patina which appears with a rusty sort of turquoise color.
You can clean your fountain on a weekly or monthly basis using a little bit of vinegar and water in order to remove this surface. Pour it on the rocks and into the water, scrubbing just gently in order to clean away the patina so that you end up with clean, clear rocks again.

In the older days of England, many people who worked in small villages kept small homes with tiny gardens. These gardens did not have much space, but they were required to supply the entire family with all of their needs. The kitchen garden, for example, would consist of mixed fruits and vegetables in order to give the families their nutrition. Among the array of vegetables, flowers and herbs, flowers and other plants would also be grown. Some of the more popular flower varieties that were grown in these English country gardens included delphiniums, hollyhocks, daisies and flowering herbs such as mint. English country gardens and cottage gardens exhibited a type of style that evolved well throughout the years and the necessities of the families as time progressed.
If these families did not have the benefits of this home grown produce, many of them would have gone hungry. These gardens were not nearly as formal as the gardens belonging to wealthy landowners, which were significantly more formal with straight lines, box hedges, stone paths and so much more like stone fountains and walls that depicted gods and other images beautifully.
Recreating these English country gardens in your own garden space is easy. You can create a luxurious garden the way that the wealthy land owners did, or you can choose a nourishment rich garden full of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers. You may also choose to combine the two types of gardens together, if you want to create something that is both beautiful and luxurious and also nourishing and functional.
One of the most famous of all English country gardens was designed by a famous French impressionist painter going by the name of Claude Monet. His cottage gardens were filled with an abundance of stunning roses that grew over fences beautifully. His English country garden designs were so stunning that they are now emulated all over the world for their timeless beauty and luxurious qualities.
These English country gardens can afford you with an informal style if you mix in tall and stunning perennials that battle one another for space along rocks, walls, fences and fountains. These English country gardens are stunning for creating a wild infusion of substance and texture, large plants mixed in with small, trees stretching into the sky. There is no limit to what you can create when you work within your English country garden, as long as you understand how to get the most out of the space that you have. And above all else, remember this: The only limit is your own creativity when it comes to English country garden design.
It might be wise to see what other people are doing in terms of English country gardens before you begin your own design. The more you know about English country gardens, the better off you will be.
