When you first saw how much space you had in your back yard you were probably really excited by the prospect of all of the plants that you could install there. But you need to consider the kind of soil that you have, the kind of light that you have, the kind of space that you have and other important details before you buy your plants, otherwise you may end up with plants that are not compatible, and this is not going to benefit anybody at all. You need to think things over before you act, end of story.
Before you buy your plants you are going to want to be attentive to where you want to place those plants in your garden. Some plants are shade loving plants and that means that they are going to want to be placed in sheltered areas. On the other end of the spectrum you are going to have plants that are sun lovers, and they are going to want the warm spots in your garden. You are also going to have drought resistant plants and they are going to want the parched areas of your garden where you may have trouble getting water too, and on the other end of the spectrum you are going to have swampy plants that enjoy it really wet, and you are going to want to install those plants in the areas of your garden that do not drain well.
Knowing what to plant is vitally important. Are you wanting to plant fruits and vegetables or flowers and shrubs? Make sure that you are starting small, because you can always add to your garden later as you want to, just make sure that you are doing it gradually. This is going to be particularly important if you are dealing with a garden budget of course.
You are going to want to test out the pH level of your soil so that you can add the right types of nutrients to your soil before you do any planting. You are going to be able to alter the pH of your soil if you need to, but it is significantly easier for you to do this now than if you were to do it after you planted your garden, so consider that before you do anything else.
Another good rule of thumb that you should consider is that you should plant in groups. Having a lot of varieties of plants is nice, but the one-of-everything type of garden is not typically one that thrives. Buy a couple of each plant and plant them in groups so that they can sort of thrive together for the best possible results.

Economy is a web of interconnected systems that sustain one another. When one part of the economy suffers, it has a ripple effect. With gas prices on the rise again and affects of economic downturn still rampant in the US, many consumers are returning to sustainable ways of living. Food prices have hit record spikes in prices, which has fostered growth in an ancient custom. Community and urban gardening is on the rise across the country, which has pushed the boundaries of some city bylaws, especially in regard to raising livestock. Naturalhomemagazine.com released an article that listed the top ten cities that have the largest urban gardening communities. These densely populated areas, which are usually know better for their high crime rates and lower income communities, are now creating public programs for average citizens and neighbors to work together to produce 100 percent organically grown produce. Created out of necessity, due to rising food costs and budgetary concerns, many of these programs have the additional benefits of an increased emphasis on community relations and a reduction in local crimes rates. Places, such as Portland, St. Louis, and Nashville, have the highest community gardening programs per capita that have helped transform local communities, improve cost, and living conditions.
Many individuals have also begun their own backyard gardens to produce most of the fruits and vegetables they use, and there are many websites to help other start their backyard plan, including instruction for bed construction, fertilization, and composting. The goal is to show residents how to work with small growing spaces and flowerpots to start growing instead of buying. This has helped educate consumers on sustainable living and reduced our carbon footprint one person at a time.
Some tips for beginning your own urban garden include:
- Grow vegetables that you enjoy eating on a regular basis and plan out a growing space on your rooftop, deck, or backyard.
- Some vegetable can be grown solely in flower pots if you have no outside space, as long as there is a well-lit window.
- Pick out a variety of produce that you want to grow and start small. Grow foods that require less space like greens, tomatoes, herbs, cucumbers, carrots, and beans.
You’ll be surprised at how much you can do and grow within an urban setting. In the older days of England, many people who worked in small villages kept small homes with tiny gardens. These gardens did not have much space, but they were required to supply the entire family with all of their needs. The kitchen garden, for example, would consist of mixed fruits and vegetables in order to give the families their nutrition. Among the array of vegetables, flowers and herbs, flowers and other plants would also be grown. Some of the more popular flower varieties that were grown in these English country gardens included delphiniums, hollyhocks, daisies and flowering herbs such as mint. English country gardens and cottage gardens exhibited a type of style that evolved well throughout the years and the necessities of the families as time progressed.
If these families did not have the benefits of this home grown produce, many of them would have gone hungry. These gardens were not nearly as formal as the gardens belonging to wealthy landowners, which were significantly more formal with straight lines, box hedges, stone paths and so much more like stone fountains and walls that depicted gods and other images beautifully.
Recreating these English country gardens in your own garden space is easy. You can create a luxurious garden the way that the wealthy land owners did, or you can choose a nourishment rich garden full of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers. You may also choose to combine the two types of gardens together, if you want to create something that is both beautiful and luxurious and also nourishing and functional.
One of the most famous of all English country gardens was designed by a famous French impressionist painter going by the name of Claude Monet. His cottage gardens were filled with an abundance of stunning roses that grew over fences beautifully. His English country garden designs were so stunning that they are now emulated all over the world for their timeless beauty and luxurious qualities.
These English country gardens can afford you with an informal style if you mix in tall and stunning perennials that battle one another for space along rocks, walls, fences and fountains. These English country gardens are stunning for creating a wild infusion of substance and texture, large plants mixed in with small, trees stretching into the sky. There is no limit to what you can create when you work within your English country garden, as long as you understand how to get the most out of the space that you have. And above all else, remember this: The only limit is your own creativity when it comes to English country garden design.
It might be wise to see what other people are doing in terms of English country gardens before you begin your own design. The more you know about English country gardens, the better off you will be.
